Before city-scale analytics, much of the built environment’s logic lives inside buildings—atria, libraries, courtyards, and culturally shaped spatial sequences that organise movement, visibility, and social life. Complex Building gathers space syntax research on how configurational structure shapes experience in architecturally rich, multilevel environments.
One strand examines atrium space in university libraries: axial and visibility graph analysis of multilevel buildings, combined with field investigation, to understand how atrium configuration supports accessibility, communication, and programmatic organisation—distinguishing weak and strong programmatic models and showing how spatial structure guides behaviour.
A complementary strand compares traditional Chinese imperial and private gardens through visibility graph analysis, linking configurational differences in programme, wayfinding, visual relationship, and spatial depth to their distinct cultural contexts—moving from qualitative typologies toward quantitative, hypothesis-driven comparison.
Together, these studies share a common method: space syntax as a bridge between formal analysis and human-centred interpretation of complex architectural space—work that later informed my interest in linking morphology, perception, and social outcome across scales.
